Ericsson Baseband and Digital Unit hardware

Ericsson's digital unit line runs through three naming generations that describe broadly the same function, and knowing which one you are dealing with is the first step in any enquiry. DUG and DUS units shipped with RBS 6000 cabinets; the Baseband 5000 and 6000 series replaced them; RAN Processor units serve the current generation. Each step forward brought more capacity in less rack space, and each introduced dependencies on radio hardware and software release. Operators come to us for these when a digital unit fails and the replacement is no longer orderable, or when a capacity upgrade needs to stay within an existing cabinet.

How to read these part numbers

Ericsson baseband hardware uses the `KDU` and `KDV` product-number prefixes, with the marketing name giving the generation and capacity class — Baseband 5216, Baseband 6630, DUS 41 01. In the DUS and DUG names, the two-digit groups distinguish variants rather than expressing a specification, so DUS 31 and DUS 41 differ in capacity and supported technology and are not simply revisions of each other. Where a listing shows a second product number, it is normally an included subassembly such as a fan; both are given here so you can confirm what a quotation actually covers.

Ordering notes

State the technologies the unit must support — GSM, WCDMA, LTE, NR or a mix — and the number of cells and carriers, because these determine capacity class rather than the model name alone. Confirm the RBS cabinet or enclosure the unit fits and the software release running on the site. Ericsson basebands are tightly coupled to both the radios they drive and the release they run, so a unit that is nominally a step up can fail to commission. Where you are replacing like for like, quote the KDU number from the existing unit's label.

Lifecycle and availability

DUG and DUS units are end-of-support and available as refurbished or new surplus only. The Baseband 5000 and 6000 series are largely end-of-sale but well represented in the surplus market. RAN Processor units remain current. Per-line status is given in the table.

Equipment condition

New — factory-sealed, supplied through the manufacturer's authorised channel or an authorised distributor, with full manufacturer warranty.

New surplus — unused factory stock, original packaging where available, sourced from decommissioned projects or distributor inventory. Manufacturer warranty may have lapsed; CRS PLUS warranty applies.

Refurbished / tested — previously deployed equipment, cleaned, firmware-checked and functionally tested against the manufacturer's specification before shipment. CRS PLUS warranty applies.

Condition is confirmed in writing on every quotation before you commit to an order.

Warranty terms vary by item, by condition and by the supplier the equipment is sourced from. They are stated in writing on the quotation, per line item, before you commit to an order.

Where equipment is supplied new through an authorised channel, the manufacturer's warranty applies and is passed to you.

Frequently asked questions

Different hardware generations serving the same role. Baseband 6630 offers substantially more capacity in less space, but it also requires a software release and radio combination that an older site may not have. Replacing one with the other is a project, not a swap.
